Where the name comes from

Ultenix joins ult (as in ultimate) to -nix. The tail points at the Unix and Linux line. It is a sign meant for the people who recognise it; to everyone else it can stay a word that means nothing yet.

There is a second reading of that tail: Phoenix. A terminal is frightening because one wrong character cannot be taken back. Ultenix stops before anything that cannot be undone. What is gone may be gone, but you get to start again, as many times as it takes. The back half of the name sits on that side of the promise.

We invented a word because the real ones were gone. Anything that could claim "ultimate" was already held by domain speculators and crowded with software trademarks. Rebuilding from ult- finally produced a word that nobody had taken.
